Welcome to the Australian Assange Campaign. We thank you for joining us in our efforts to raise awareness about the plight of WikiLeaks founder, and former Editor-in-chief, Julian Assange.
Our goal is to ensure Julian’s freedom.
John Shipton’s visit to the Jefferson Memorial Memorial during the Home Run for Julian US Tour raised thoughts of these quotes from the Founding Fathers of the United States
“Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”― Thomas Jefferson
Whoever would overthrow the Liberty of a Nation, must begin by subduing the Freeness of Speech
Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruinsBenjamin Franklin
Julian is currently detained in Belmarsh maximum security prison where he is fighting extradition to the United States. The US has charged Julian with 17 counts under the Espionage Act, and one count under the US Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, essentially for carrying out regular journalistic activity. Julian faces 175 years (the rest of his life) in prison for exposing war crimes and serious human rights violations.
This is effectively a death sentence and cruel and unusual punishment.
The precedent set by this political prosecution is extremely dangerous because of the extraterritorial overreach (an Australian citizen who was not in US jurisdiction), and the disproportionate sentence involved. Not only will Julian pay the ultimate personal price for exposing the truth, the persecution has an inevitable chilling effect on the exposure of government malfeasance globally. We cannot and must not allow this to occur.
